It is being reported that Serie A club Sampdoria are now leading the way to sign Celtic forward Giorgos Giakoumakis after agreeing terms to make the switch to Italy [@DiMarzio].

In recent days the 28-year-old Greek international was being linked to a move away to J-League outfit Urawa Red Diamonds but it now looks as though he could be remaining in European football.

Despite having reached an agreement over personal terms, Sampdoria are yet to reach an agreement to make the move happen.

Initial reports are suggesting that the club submitted a loan with obligation to buy in the summer as they try and save themselves from relegation.

They currently sit in 19th place in the Seria A table – two points off bottom and will be hoping that Giakoumakis can bang in the goals to keep them in the Italy’s top tier.

He was last in a relegation scrap at his former club VVV-Venlo and despite finishing top goalscorer in Dutch football, his side were relegated before he made the switch to Glasgow.

it has become very common practice for a clubs to negotiate a potential deal with a player before clubs reach an agreement. However, there could be some risk around the deal as the obligation to buy may depend on whether Sampdoria stay in Serie A.

The Greek striker has been an important player to Ange Postecoglou at the Scottish champions and played a major part in the Hoops winning the league title last season having also chipped in during this campaign.
