We’re now nearly halfway through the January transfer window, and Celtic have just one signing to show for it – Julian Araujo, who arrived on loan from Bournemouth.
The Mexican international has already featured in all three matches since his arrival, starting the last two under Martin O’Neill. But one right-back won’t cut it in a title race where both Rangers and Hearts are strengthening aggressively.
Despite many assuming the window closes on January 31, the actual deadline is Monday, February 2 at 11pm GMT. That’s when the registration period ends, and the Hoops’ last chance to get deals done.
Between now and then, Celtic fans are hoping to see some serious quality added to the squad.
There are 16 league matches remaining, and the title race is on a knife-edge. Celtic are in a dog fight, but they won’t stay there unless they match their rivals in the market.
Rangers and Hearts have acted early. They’ve identified weaknesses and addressed them. Celtic, so far, haven’t. And they’re quickly running out of excuses.
Everyone has known that the Hoops need a striker for nearly a year now, yet, despite the club supposedly being learning from their mistakes, an addition up top doesn’t even seem imminent.
The next few days will be telling. Celtic must make serious moves and soon.
