Former Celtic midfielder Scott Allan has shared his views on the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market this summer. Allan, who signed for Celtic in 2016 but only made 17 appearances, pointed out several areas where the club needs to strengthen before the new season begins.

“The fans have demanded that because of how Europe has gone for Celtic these past few years,” Allan told BBC Sport, reflecting on the club’s recent struggles in European competitions. Despite some successes, the 32-year-old highlighted a broader issue with squad depth and the need for reinforcements.

“Some of the guys from the Asian market have done really well – Reo Hatate and Kyogo – but there’s a lot of players just sitting on the sidelines taking a lot of money from Celtic and not playing,” Allan noted.

Celtic’s transfer inactivity comes at a critical time. The team needs to replace retired goalkeeper Joe Hart and find a new left-back to rival Greg Taylor. Additionally, players like Bernardo and Idah, who were on loan last season, are also on the radar.

Allan also touched on the development of youth players within the club, questioning the productivity of the youth systems at both Celtic and Rangers. “Is there anything coming out of either side’s youth systems? There probably hasn’t been enough in the last few years,” he remarked, suggesting that more could be done to nurture young talent.

Despite these issues, the former Parkhead midfielder observed that Celtic seems to be taking a more deliberate approach to their signings this summer. “There’s got to be changes from both clubs, but Celtic seem to be going down the patient route this time and looking for the right calibre of player.”

With the season opener against Kilmarnock at Celtic Park on August 4th looming, the pressure is on for Celtic to make the necessary additions to their squad. The fans are growing impatient with each passing day.
