Scottish Football’s Real Obsession

CELTIC have been on an incredible run that has faced probably it’s biggest challenges in the past month or so.

The unbeaten streak in all domestic competition stands at a staggering 69 games and while Celtic fans can’t stop going on about it, neither can our rivals.

Every game now is not just another game against Celtic, it’s a game against the streak. If you’re so inclined to watch the pageantry of wrestling you may be familiar with the legendary Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak. Quite a departure from football but the similarities are there, the more the deadman won, the more it wasn’t about beating the man himself, but instead, the streak he held.

That’s what’s happening in Scottish football, our opponents have ceased to see Celtic and it’s all about beating the record-breaking run, not the team.

Case and point – Craig Levein spoke yesterday about not just his team coming up against Celtic but others who have tried and nearly handed Rodgers his first domestic defeat.

“All of us are trying to do it,” Levein said. “We will have to rely on a few things, us being very good on the day and Celtic not being quite at their best.

“A couple of teams have come close recently, but hopefully we can be the ones that stop this run.”

Obsession is usually a word that has negative connotations but in this instance, I’m attaching positives to it.

Every game Celtic play has the added spice, is this the day? Or will the Celtic juggernaut continue?

Some people are dying to see Celtic get beat, just so they can have an almost therapeutic sigh of relief. However, we should let them into a little secret; once Celtic do get beaten, we’ll just start a brand new one all over again.

Unlike a deluded black knight in a famous Monty Pythons scene, it WILL only be a flesh wound.
