It is very fair to say that Shane Duffy’s move to Celtic on loan from Brighton last summer didn’t exactly live up to some fans expectations and ultimately ended in disaster.

With that in mind, many supporters were slightly surprised to see him included in the Brighton squad for their first game of the season, given his poor performances in the campaign previous.

However, the Irishman has had somewhat of a revival down south and has once again become a regular in Graham Potter’s high-flying side currently.

As quoted by the Daily Record, Duffy spoke out about his return form and the reasoning behind it – stating that luck was on his side in pre-season and the beginning of the campaign.

He said: “I got a bit of luck with a couple of Covid cases and a couple of injuries, and I’ve got a few games, and I’ve just tried to make the most of it.

“I’m really grateful for it. A lot of managers, if it doesn’t work out and especially the year I had performance-wise, I could have been with the 18s, 23s and then been finding a new club.

“But from the first day I came back, he has seen a different side of me. He’s seen that I’ve tried to make a difference in my life.

“I got a bit of luck as well in pre-season with a couple of injuries and Covid cases. Sometimes you need that in football.

“But the club is really lucky to have this kind of manager who cares a lot about the players, not just football-wise but about personal life, and that goes a long way in life.”

His loan spell in Scotland with his boyhood club didn’t turn out to be the success we all hoped it would be, and it was disappointing to see how it went across the season.

Sometimes, a player just doesn’t suit a club or its style, which was Duffy with Celtic.

He now seems to be thriving again in the Premier League, which some might be getting frustrated about, given the performances of the entire team last season.

Fair play to him for that, though, as it would have been easy for many people to give up on such a comeback.
