SHAUN MALONEY was the front runner to replace Mark McGhee at Dundee after it was announced his contract would not be renewed.

The former Celtic player had previously headed Hibs, but his time was controversially cut short by the Edinburgh club.

Now, Maloney could ditch the Scottish Championship for the English Championship.

It’s thought that Vincent Kompany is keen to take Maloney with him as they look to fight for promotion in their first year in the second flight. [Football Scotland]

It would see Maloney park his ambitions of becoming a manager for the time being and learn his trade with the Belgian manager in England.

The former Manchester City defender has previously managed Anderlecht before becoming Sean Dyche’s successor.

Confirmation of Kompany’s appointment will follow soon, with the former defender leaving his previous role to enter discussions with Burnley.

Fabrizio Romano reports that a deal is ‘close’ to being struck.

It’s certainly exciting for Maloney; Dundee is a good job to get back in with. However, helping lead what could be an exciting project down south is also appealing.
