Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has hit out at Liam Shaw’s agent after the 19-year old completed a pre-contract move to Celtic in January.

As quoted by the Daily Record speaking to Yorkshire Live, Chansiri put the blame solely on the agent after being criticised by some of the Owls support for supposedly not trying to sign the young midfielder up on a new deal when in fact it was down to the player’s agent not working closely with the club.

“I thought he was going to go to Celtic because of the agent talking to Celtic.

“When he had a chance to play for the first team, he did quite well and we tried to keep him.

“We talked to them for quite a long time but they just asked to wait and we know why they asked to wait because maybe they were trying to find another club.

“I heard from my people, they told me some fans say ‘why didn’t we try to sign him last year or before’.

“I believe no-one last year, or before in the summer, no-one talked about Liam Shaw. They just tried to talk about him when he is in the first XI and he is doing okay.

“We tried to extend his contract but the agent asked to wait and wait. We knew something was wrong and it’s normal in football.

“When a player tries to be good, then they already try to find another club.

“It doesn’t mean Celtic looked after him a long time.”

The situation around Shaw signing has been quite a strange one with former boss Neil Lennon confirming a deal had been done but we are still yet to receive any confirmation from channels elsewhere within Celtic.

It becomes even stranger with the fact that Lennon is now no longer in charge at the club, so it does beg the question of whether this was a signing the Northern Irishman wanted to make or was it purely down to the board looking towards the future.

Shaw does appear to have a bright future in the game though, playing consistently in the Championship this season, as one of Wednesday’s few stand-out players in what has been a poor campaign.
