Dundee United midfielder Calum Butcher could be set to face a ban for his tackle on Celtic midfielder David Turnbull in the Hoops 3-0 win over the Tannadice side on Sunday.

Just nine minutes after coming off the bench, the United man was somehow not given his marching orders in the second half for a horrific challenge on Turnbull, which the 22-year old was lucky to walk away from without any sort of injury.

However, as reported by the Dundee Courier, the SFA will now ‘review the footage’ of the challenge before deciding whether or not Butcher will be handed a suspension from action tomorrow.

Thankfully, Turnbull did not sustain an injury yesterday. Ange Postecoglou will also be happy the scoreline was not closer at the time, with the Hoops leading 2-0 at the time of the challenge.

Even if Butcher is handed a well-deserved suspension for the challenge, what sort of effect is that supposed to have on Celtic?

The challenge was sustained on a Celtic player, but it will be other sides, including Glasgow rivals Rangers, who benefit from the Englishman receiving a ban.

This sort of debate once again brings up the topic of VAR in Scotland and the standard of refereeing in this country. Something needs to be done soon surrounding these decisions, which cannot continue to happen week in, week out.

  1. The Huns benefiting from a potential ban has nothing to do with them or us . It would be to to punish the player himself obviously.
