The reports suggesting Celtic are about to sell their striker Giakoumakis for only €4m to Japanese side Urawa Reds has taken Celtic fans by surprise. [Fabrizio Romano]

This move is surprising for a few reasons. First, this package is far less than what Giakoumakis is worth, and it is much less than it would cost to replace him.

This seems like a clear financial loss for Celtic even if they do make a small profit from the money they laid out for him 18-months ago.

Second, the move is strange considering the player‘s talent. Giakoumakis is a dangerous striker who has proven to be a consistent goal-scorer. Therefore, it is surprising he would accept a package that is so much lower than his market value.

Additionally, the transfer could potentially hurt the team in the long run unless there is a clear plan for a replacement. It will be difficult to find someone who can fill Giakoumakis‘ shoes and contribute to the team in the same way straight off the bat. We’ll need someone who can come in and help Kyogo as the bhoys chase two in a row.
Do you believe €4m is a fair price for a striker under contract until 2026?
