It seems like a long time since Jason Denayer played for Celtic but it was just two short seasons ago.

Then, under Celtic manager Ronny Deila the youngster put on some great performances that belied his age. He went back to Manchester City with the hope of breaking into the first team, that was short lived when he was loaned out to Galatasaray the following season where the player managed 17 league appearances for the Turkish outfit.

He again headed back to Manchester where he was quickly touted about at the start of this season, so much so that it was heavily was that Brendan Rodgers was looking to bring the player back to Celtic on a possible loan deal. The story goes that Celtic were waiting for the Jozo Simunovic deal to go through before giving the go ahead to Man City who the club has close ties with. In the end, Jozo’s deal to Torino fell through in bizarre circumstances on deadline day and with that seen the end of Celtic’s interest in bringing the City man back.

Jason then made a deadline day move to Davie Moyes’ Sunderland side where he’s played 22 times this season in all competitions and has been played as a midfielder as well as a defender. He has been in

During his spell at Celtic in the SPFL, Denayer was named PFA Young Player of the Year, after helping the club to a league and cup double. The player would be two seasons older and wiser as well as be great competition for the defenders already at the club.

Interest could be resurrected in the defender this summer if Manchester City still doesn’t have plans for the Belgian. Jason is contracted to City for another three years so a permanent deal would be unlikely at this juncture but certainly something to think about.

Some fans may be put off though as it would totally ruin the catchy Boyata song.

  1. Personally I don’t think so, watching him play this season I think he has went back the way and is carrying extra weight, we do not have a problem with c/b at the moment plus another loan deal do we really need that just now

  2. No thanks, he had his chance. He won’t play for City….when he left Celtic they had just bought another player….£43million!!!!!
I don’t think he appreciated Parkhead….a warning to wee Patrick.

  3. IF we were getting the fantastic player we had for a season and it was a permanent deal then I would have him back in a flash. But, having read his disparaging comments on the standard of Scottish football (but not on Celtic-he only has good words to say there) it is unfortunately highly unlikely to happen.

  4. I make disparaging comments about Scottish fitba every other day 🙂 I’d welcome him back. I think having played in Turkey and the Prem he’ll have developed well. Especially the constant bombardment of a relegation battle. Not another loan though only a perm deal. Pre season uner our management and his confidence will be back

  5. Boyata is still a bomb scare – an awful footballer who is good in the air from crossed balls.

If Deneyar is as good as he was when he left then I’d take him on a permanent deal in a heartbeat.

Catch yourselves on because he’s made disparaging comments – we don’t have a pool of resources to choose from so big we can turn our noses up at quality because he made a flippant comment that hurt our feelings

    We are all big boys.

Many have held hands up and apologised before and all was forgiven

    • Danny,

By disparaging comments I mean he will not return up here in any circumstances even if Pep strong armed him up here personally as he sees Scottish football as a backwater and I can’t really argue with him.

  6. Cant deny he put in some brilliant shifts for Celtic but have watch a few of his appearances for Sunderland and he’s not the player he was a couple of seasons ago, as CharlieK says I think he’s put on weight and its definitely slowed him down. Afraid he doesn’t get a 10 from me.

  7. The Denayer of 2 years ago? Sign him up! Is he not going to be on silly EPL money though, and even sillier transfer fee? As Jay Beer says, he had his chance – opportunity has gone. Would rather see O’Connell back and see what he can develop into.

  8. He was great when he played here and loved playing for the Celts, once a Celt always a Celt hail hail, Jimmy Murphy

  9. And he has cost them countless goals.Boyata has earned his regular place.mund you i do believe we need a champions league CH

  10. Its not Denayer we need.We need another decent winger,Paddy Roberts is going back end of.How Griffiths isnt getting a game,Beggars Belief. After all he won us the league last season.

    • If we were losing or struggling I could understand your comments about Grif.

      Brendan hasn’t got much wrong.
