I’m sure some will scoff at this article as soon as the players name is mentioned but in the spirit of looking in our own back door like we have done with Stuart Armstrong and GMS then there is no reason why Celtic couldn’t take a punt on this striker.

He’s scored 16 goals in the SPFL this season and currently leads the goal scoring charts. double the amount of Celtic’s top SPFL goal scorer John Guidetti who is on 8. Of course, I am talking about Aberdeen’s Adam Rooney.

The well travelled 26 year old has had 9 clubs during his career but has always found the net in the SPFL, first with ICT and now with Aberdeen.

Celtic have spent over the odds on players like Banngura, Pukki and Balde over the last while then it would make a lot of sense to go for a proven goal scorer in this league surely. If he can score goals with Aberdeen than he can score goals with Celtic for sure.

Some Celtic fans get irked when you mention what they consider ‘low key’ signings but you have to look after your bread and butter and that is the Scottish Premier League and the Irishman could do more than an adequate job. Instead of hunting the globe for potential, Rooney would prove a relatively inexpensive low risk punt.

Of course this would depend on Aberdeen playing ball with us for a decent fee. They would not want to see one of their best players exit Pittodre for a pittance but also they like Dundee Utd would be realistic about any negotiations.

Of course this is all just me thinking out loud. Would I love to write an article that Celtic should rescue Flacao from Manchester United or make Harry Kane and Tottenham an offer they cant refuse – of course! But while shooting for the stars we need work horses and players who can make sure we qualify for the Champions league via winning the SPFL – Rooney is a player who could do that.

Do you think Rooney is worth a punt?
