The SPFL has announced that for this season only, top-flight clubs can bring in a as much as six loan players for the upcoming season. This was decided at the same meeting Peter Lawwell was appointed back onto the SPFL board.

The rules have been relaxed to allow clubs to bulk up their squad at a time when they are struggling financially and can’t afford permanent deals. The reality of the shutdown is yet to fully bite but allowing all 42 member clubs to bring in extra loans will make a difference.

Celtic have one player on loan at the moment and you can expect they will get another one or two in at least. The usual number of loans clubs are allowed is four, but as we go into this new season, there’s nothing usual about anything.

No supporters, five substitutes allowed if the SPFL choose to adopt FIFA’s new rule and a fixture list which consists of two Scottish Cup competitions in the same season. It’s madness and with the fixture list piling up for Celtic, this is something they should be taking advantage of.

Celtic have used the loan market to much success over the piece but we have also seen guys like Charly Musonda and Daniel Arzani waste their time in Scotland. Not every loan can be a success but those two deals, in particular, were poor in the end.
