Paul Merson was praised by many Celtic supporters and John Hartson for praising Celtic’s resolve and staying ability as they enter next season looking for ten in a row.
However, these quotes doing the rounds weren’t all Merson said on the Scottish champions. The rest of what Merson said branded Celtic ’embarrassing’ for their display in December against their Glasgow rivals. The English pundit also claimed Celtic aren’t much better than their rivals.
“I watched Rangers wipe the floor with Celtic before the winter break when they won at Celtic Park. They played them off the park. It was embarrassing and it was like the away side were going to go on and win the league by 15 points.” Merson said as cited by HITC.
“Then Celtic went on a run of 10 or 11 games and Rangers are losing against teams lower down the league. That’s what I mean about having to turn up every single week.
“I don’t think Celtic are much better than Rangers but what they’ve got is that they turn up every week knowing what to do. Celtic treat every game like a cup final. Rangers need to get that.”
Celtic were ahead by so many points by the end of the league season, how anyone can say there’s not much between the sides is a bit rich.
We’re all for competition and they did manage to stay in touch in the first half of the season, hoping Celtic would falter more than they did. In the end, the relentless pressure Celtic kept excerting was too much and the walls caved in on their title challenge.
The bhoys never take anything for granted, that’s why they continue to be winners. They never over celebrate a one-off result and know the hard work comes in the games where they’re expected to run away with it – grinding out results when they need to.
