This is a recurring theme for Davie Provan in his column. The former Celtic player has absolutely slaughtered the Celtic board for the part they played in Celtic’s Euro exit this week.
Celtic were favourites to go through in the tie after beating Lazio home and away and beating Rennes and Cluj at home.
However, a comedy of errors led to the team’s demise over two legs. Some have pinned the blame on the manager and his team selection while others on the mistakes of individuals.
Provan is pointing the finger firmly at Peter Lawwell and calls the board ‘smug’ and ‘self-satisfied’ as he continues his tirade.
Writing for SunSport, Provan says: Peter Lawwell’s gang will happily see Jozo Simunovic take the rap for Celtic’s exit on Thursday, but there is a bigger picture.
Thanks to this smug, self-satisfied Hoops regime this was an accident waiting to happen. The buy-low, sell-high trick might be doing wonders for the Bank of Celtic, but it’s killing the team.
Neil Lennon will accept the buck stops with him. Would starting Leigh Griffiths have made a difference? Did he get his shape?
Either way, we’re splitting hairs, Celtic just didn’t perform in that second half. But if Lennon is the fall guy, he’s been sold out by his boardroom masters.
Provan is clearly pointing to the transfer window in January where Celtic spent money on prospects but not to improve the first team ahead of the Europa League Knick outrun.
Celtic supporters wanted Wanyama or someone like that to come in and help them get a grip of the league and Europe. The domestic form has been relentless, but in Europe, we fell to an avoidable defeat.
Provan continues to bash Lawwell and clearly doesn’t see eye to eye with the chief executive. A lot of fans are in the same boat when it comes to investment, but others are happy with the Celtic board room doing only what’s needed to secure nine and ten in a row with no further ambition beyond that.
Where do you sit?
I think we should have been buying quality over the past few windows, we leave it to late year on year. Don’t get into the champions league then sell our top players to make up the loss. Strength in Europe and domestic will take care of itself.
Hes fucking bang on the money there.fuck lawell
Totally with Proven for once
Every year peter will tell you they are building a team for Europe, once the season books are sold, peter performs the same . procedure Abracadabra , he gives his hands a rub and cracks his knuckles then says to Paul who can we sell , better to have half a loaf than none at all we ain’t feeding the five thousand we only have to feed a few hundred shareholders
Provan is spot on, Lawwell is a cancer that should have been cut out years ago.
The Wilo Flood transfer window should have ended him.
A lot of the support turned on Rodgers when he left, but the anger should have gone towards the fat micromanaging egomaniac, who claims Celtic cant compete with the EPL when it comes to wages with the exception on his obscene 65k per week.
See what I’ve said it on a couple of vlogs and stuff don’t get this it’s the boards fault two words blows that theory right out of the water and I hate saying one of them aswell but hey here it is Rangers and Watford why well rangers as we all know git through to the next round and why mention Watford they humped Liverpool yesterday 3-0 and I mention it because it happens man that’s football you can’t win them all ffs I take it all the Liverpool supporters are saying that klopp should be sacked no their not it was a bad 90 minutes just like we had a bad 45 the other night and like rangers class 90 mins the other night and come domestic it’s another bad 90 mins for them yesterday psml anyway rant over hail hail
The problem is the tyranny and corruption of the unelected SFA. It was only a few months ago the Scottish national team were a bit anxious about playing San Marino away (yes, seriously) – the worst team in the world. The game up here will forever be third rate.
With this awareness, Scottish fans wouldn’t be so disappointed losing to cluj, molde, or Welsh amateur teams in the case of kilmarnock, they wouldn’t be surprised at all. Celtic and Rangers punched above their weight this year (and are the only 2 capable of doing anything in Europe).
However, at what stage would Celtic not be surprised? Arsenal got knocked out at the same stage, compared the difference in resources. What stage do we realistically expect to reach, the final? We have one good defender who is still a project in Julien. I’m still in shock we beat Lazio.
Rangers flunked it, they are a bunch of duds, stevie wonder is beginning to see.
I’m celebrating our 1-1 draw in the first leg in Denmark. What a magnificent performance.. that’s as good as it gets for a team that plays under the umbrella of a football association of the ilk of the SFA.
10 in a row in a one horse race. Woop de door
Lawell: gies yer cash. Dafabet, a business from a country engaged in at least two forms of genocide, nae bother. Thanks for the cash.
He has a point. Ffs not every criticism of the team, manager or board is tantamount to treason or hunnnery.
He’s pretty on point TBF.
Davie Provan is nothing but a poisinous little runt who thinks he is a journalist and not a wee burnt out finished x footballer pundit with a venomous streak in him against Celtic f.c.
