Benji Nygren could soon be playing under a familiar face on the international stage.
Reports are suggesting that Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin is being considered for the vacant Sweden national team job.
The Swedish FA are on the hunt for a new manager following the sacking of Jon Dahl Tomasson on Tuesday. The former Blackburn Rovers boss was dismissed after a dismal start to Sweden’s World Cup qualifying campaign, which hit a low point with a 1-0 home defeat to Kosovo, leaving them bottom of their group.
Tomasson, who once famously taunted Rangers while managing Malmo in a Champions League qualifier, has now paid the price for his side’s poor performances.
Now, Thelin has emerged as a potential candidate, according to the Daily Record. Despite his own struggles at Pittodrie, with the Dons currently bottom of the SPFL, he’s still highly regarded in his homeland after a successful stint at Elfsborg.
The Swedish FA would reportedly need to pay a significant compensation fee to secure Thelin’s services, as he’s under contract in the Granite City.
It would be a dramatic turn of events for Nygren, who only just joined Celtic this summer and is still finding his feet at Parkhead.
Their only overlap was as opponents in Sweden (Nygren at IFK Göteborg while Thelin was at Elfsborg), not the same team.
