We’re now at the halfway point of this January window but the ghosts of last years continue to haunt Celtic today.

It was this window last year when Celtic brought in German defender Marvin Compper with a view to putting him in the first team for some well-needed experience.

Marvin was fresh off the heels of a Champions League campaign where he played nearly every minute for his former side Leipzig when he came into Celtic for around £1million. It was a transfer that wasn’t going to set the world on fire, but it was acknowledged as a step in the right direction by fans who knew how short we were in defence.

Fast forward a year; Compper has only played 83 minutes for the club in a Scottish Cup tie at Parkhead. Since then he’s had injuries, the Celtic manager has declared he isn’t fit, Compper has told the media he is fit and wants to play. Celtic fans asked the question at the clubs AGM why the player was signed, and Brendan Rodgers told supporters to blame him for the defender coming in only to be wasted.

Towards the end 0f 2018, the German told fans he would be looking around in January for a new club, but there’s still been nothing on that front.

As it stands, before wages the player has cost Celtic £12,000 per minute he has been on the football field for Celtic. Staggering.

It has to go down as one of the worst signings of Celtic’s modern era, and the fact may be, Compper could have done a job at some point for the club but whatever reason – he has been left to train and pick up a wage.
