Celtic’s reported interest in Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega has come to nothing, with the German shot-stopper now set to join Nottingham Forest.
While Celtic have been linked with a host of outfield players during the January transfer window, goalkeeper has also been a position of quiet concern for some fans.
Kasper Schmeichel’s performance in Thursday night’s 4–2 win over Utrecht once again raised questions.
Although he produced some vital saves in Bologna and at Tynecastle, many feel he should have done better for at least one of the Dutch side’s goals, and concerns persist over his consistency and agility.
With his contract due to expire in the summer, a renewal looks increasingly unlikely.
Stefan Ortega had been loosely linked with a potential move to Parkhead as a possible replacement or competitor for Schmeichel. However, that speculation has now been put to rest.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Ortega has reached a verbal agreement to join Nottingham Forest from Manchester City on a permanent basis. The deal is described as a short-term contract, and Ortega is already scheduled for a medical.
Celtic, meanwhile, continue to search for reinforcements in other areas before Monday night’s deadline. The club have only brought in two loans so far.
