It has been announced that referee Stéphanie Frappart will take charge of Celtic’s UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday evening [Real Madrid].

The French official made history in 2020, becoming the first female referee of a men’s Champions League match.

She has also been selected to be one of the three women referee’s at the mens World Cup later this year in Qatar.

There was controversy at the weekend for Madrid who felt aggrieved by the referee in their 1-1 draw with Girona.

A controversial penalty was awarded by VAR which pulled Girona level in the match with a goal from Rodrygo also being ruled out.

The reigning European champions will be hoping for a better refereeing performance on Wednesday with the home side needing a victory against Celtic in order to finish top of group F with RB Leipzig just one point short of the Spanish side.

With the Hoops having nothing to play for, there is no pressure on the Scottish champions who will have a strong presence in the Santiago Bernabeu with fans likely to be dotted all around the stadium.

It’s been a hectic fixture schedule for Ange Postecoglou’s side and with four games remaining before the World Cup break, everyone will want a chance to play at the Bernabeu.
