Celtic’s failure to properly reinforce the squad over the summer has left many fans looking toward the January window with growing urgency — and frustration.
The problems are clear. A replacement for Nicolas Kuhn on the right wing never arrived. Kyogo Furuhashi, who left the club in January, was not directly replaced. And Adam Idah, who hit 20 goals during his loan spell, returned to the English Championship.
Kelechi Iheanacho was brought in — but only after the window had closed, and without the match sharpness that would’ve been expected from a summer arrival.
The result has been a squad short on options, particularly in attacking areas. The lack of depth has been plain to see in the opening months of the season, and performances have often mirrored that — flat, blunt, and lacking invention.
Supporters have made their displeasure known. Protests began following the club’s financial statement and failure to progress in Europe, with banners, chants, and an open letter sent to the board. However, those protests were paused during the recent matches against Braga and Motherwell after the board agreed to meet with fan representatives — a meeting scheduled for tonight. All eyes will be on how that discussion unfolds.
Stephen McGowan has already turned the spotlight on the January transfer window, describing it as a potentially pivotal moment for the club.
“What’s going to be interesting is the January window,” he said on the Press Box podcast. “Because it’s perfectly obvious they still need more firepower in the central area and on the right wing, as you’re aware. The failure to sign a right winger was absolutely bewildering. Really, signing two left wingers, not signing a right winger — what on earth?
“There will be the full expectation, probably rightly, that Brendan Rodgers won’t be around at the end of the season. He won’t have renewed his contract by the looks of things at the moment. So what do they do in January? Do they spend big money? Do they just go and try and get a loan signing or two?
“That board have been there a very long time. Do they markedly change their behaviour? Are they capable of changing their behaviour? I’m not sure they are. So this kind of festering unrest at Celtic, I don’t see it going away anytime soon.”
The pressure is building. What Celtic choose to do — or not do — in January could shape the remainder of the season, and beyond.
