Stephen Welsh has spoken for the first time about his loan switch from Celtic to Motherwell.
Welsh has been part of the Celtic first-team picture since 2020 but found himself slipping further down the pecking order under Brendan Rodgers. With new signings arriving and competition for places fierce, he was told opportunities would be limited this season.
Rather than sit on the sidelines, the Scottish defender chose to take on a fresh challenge in Lanarkshire. He believes Motherwell is the right place to get back to playing every week and continue his development at a high level in the Premiership.
Welsh revealed that the chance to work with Jens Berthel Askou also played a big part in his move, praising the manager’s approach and the style of play at Fir Park. He also credited his new teammates for helping him settle in quickly.
He said: (STV Sport), “I knew that I wasn’t going to be playing many games at Celtic, that was made clear.
“My priority was to go out and play as many games as I can.
“The gaffer made it very open that he wanted me here, he wanted me to come and play.
“Obviously, the style helps. The boys have been great the last few weeks, very welcoming.”
Welsh’s honesty reflects the reality for many homegrown players at Celtic. With the squad stacked in central defence, breaking into the starting XI has become an uphill battle, and a loan move offers valuable minutes that Parkhead cannot guarantee.
His decision could also benefit Celtic in the long run. A consistent run of games at Motherwell may sharpen his form and give Rodgers a stronger option when he returns, or boost his value should the club decide to cash in next summer.
The defender’s comments also show the importance of playing time for players trying to establish themselves. By choosing regular football over sitting on the bench, Welsh is showing the ambition to progress his career.
For now, the focus is firmly on Motherwell. Welsh will be eager to impress, prove his quality in the Premiership, and remind everyone, Celtic included, of what he can bring when trusted with a regular role.
