Scotland boss Steve Clarke believes that Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor is overlooked when it comes to his performances for the national side.

It has been somewhat of a successful year for Clarke with Scotland, playing at the Euros and securing a play-off place for the 2022 World Cup.

One of the players at the heart of these achievements was Hoops captain Callum McGregor, who put in several impressive performances, including the Tartan Army’s trip to Wembley to face England and scoring the only goal for his nation at last summers tournament.

Clarke believes McGregor can be overlooked at times despite those performances, with his midfield partners Billy Gilmour and John McGinn taking more of the headlines.

“I think in midfield, you look at Callum McGregor,” he said, speaking to Sky Sports.

“He sometimes maybe gets overlooked because Billy gets the headlines, but Callum McGregor’s had a really good year with the international team. He was a standout, him and Ryan Jack, against Serbia.

“Callum has continued on a really good level for the national team. Obviously, now he’s captain of Celtic, and he’s got that responsibility and the more captains you’ve got on the pitch, the better.”

The Celtic captain has also continued to show those impressive displays for his club this season, at the heart of the midfield for Ange Postecoglou.

This won’t come as much of a surprise to the Celtic support, given the quality we have seen McGregor showcase over his years with the club.

It is great to see him receive some much-deserved praise for his contributions to the national team after a successful year.

He will be looking to keep up those performances in both the Celtic side and Steve Clarkes Scotland team, with some crucial fixtures to come for both in the coming months.
