KUNDAI BENYU came to Celtic from Ipswich Town last year with most people not knowing an awful lot about him.

Fast forward 12 months and nothing has changed.

The 20-year-old who was brought in as a project for Brendan Rodgers was initially earmarked to go straight back out on-loan last summer; however, having seen him up close Rodgers decided he would be best served being around the club.

After a couple of sporadic experiences followed by a poor show in Celtic’s 5-0 win over Kilmarnock where he was substituted – the midfielder was never heard from again.

In January, Rodgers decided to pull the trigger on a loan deal for the young lad and sent him back down south to Oldham to get much needed first team experience.

Three games into his loan move and he was dropped from the team, making just one more league appearance the rest of the season. He firstly fell to the bench and then out of the squad altogether as Oldham fought against relegation – a battle that was unsuccessful in the end.

Between Celtic and Oldham, the midfielder has played just nine first team games this season – a total of 459 minutes on the field.

With first team football key to development and the fact the player couldn’t hold a place down with a League 1 side – it has to be concerning for the manager.

Kundai looks lively on the field and eager but doesn’t show much discipline or awareness. With so many players in his position vying for a place in the team – there is no chance of Kundai making his way into the Celtic starting XI this season.

Should Celtic cut their losses with the 20-year-old or should they seek to find him a better loan club before giving up on this particular project?

A loan move in Scottish football would make the most sense.

  1. Loan the bloke oot at Livi, the sheep or a Scottish championship side like Dundee U, or Ross cun7y , as they will be trying to fight their way up their respective tables and he should get plenty (Or none as before) Playtime. Like Charly Misonda you can’t polish a turd.

  2. Benyu is a luxury player, sort of in the mold of Scott Allan so wherever he goes on loan it should be to a team that is challenging to win something, not an Oldham that is digging in and scraping for points. A top end Scottish Championship team like a Dundee United or an Inverness could be a good move for him where he will get to play attacking football without worrying about the grind of another relegation battle.

  3. Why on earth do you think his agent engineered a move away from Ipswich, his attitude constantly held him back there. Mick McCarthy forced him out on load to Aldershot and he at last started to perform regularly in non-league. We were gobsmacked when he went to Celtic

  4. I think “Ira newborn” as a login name says all we need to know about someone’s mentality or lack thereof.
Benyu looked like a really good player when he joined. I’m still sure he will come good for us.
To describe him as Rodgers’ biggest flop is ridiculous – what about Compper, Gamboa, Hayes…..
Rodgers’ signings have not all been brilliant just because he made them; the whole euphoria around him is overhyped. This article is, quite frankly, bullshit.

    • Agreed Benyu is a low risk, high potential reward signing considering the amount Celtic paid to bring him in, besides he didn’t look that bad in the games he played. A guy like Eboue Kouassi is a much bigger “flop” when rating Rodgers signings but I still think he can come good. Signings isn’t really Brendan’s strong suit when you look at his career, especially at Liverpool. Brendan is a fantastic coach but some fo the players he brought to Anfield such as Balotelli and Markovic were major flops and some of the players he has brought to Parkhead make you wonder as well.
