CHRIS SUTTON has gone in on what’s wrong at Celtic and he doesn’t believe it’s the current defensive crisis.

The former Celtic striker thinks Celtic could make do without a Jullien replacement but one thing they desperately need is a goalkeeper.

Going on a rant during the RecordSport podcast this week, the BT Sport pundit brands Vasilis Barkas a waste of money; believes Celtic fans will be sick watching Fraser Forster keep a clean sheet against Liverpool and none of the goalkeepers at the club look like they can put a run together and be dominant in the box.

“We talk about pressure on Neil Lennon and of course there is, but what about the pressure on Nicky Hammond?

“The fact you look at the situation where Celtic have signed a goalkeeper [Barkas] for millions of pounds who hasn’t made a save this season.

Jullien is a massive loss, but the fact Celtic don’t have a keeper of authority leaves them extremely vulnerable.

“I think Celtic can make do [without a new centre-half]. I’m not saying it’s perfect.

“But the position they can’t make do with is a goalkeeper.

“It’s probably sickening for Celtic fans watching Fraser Forster keep a clean sheet for Southampton against Liverpool on Tuesday with his presence and authority. It’s a priority position.

“It’s been interesting this season with the chopping and changing. He’s my No.1, now he’s my No.1. We’ve had Conor Hazard, Scott Bain. Barkas was chopped and now he’s back in.

“There’s nothing to suggest that somehow their form is going to be good enough to warrant playing in goal.

“It’s been a waste of money on Barkas. What have we seen to make us think he’s going to turn it around? If he does, good luck to him.

“But I just don’t see it, so bringing in a keeper is the priority in January and also hanging onto what he’s got.”

Barkas has been thrown under the bus by many, he’s not done much wrong but he’s not been imposing.

A huge part of goalkeeping at Celtic is sitting idle for a lot of the game but springing into life when needed. The keeper has not got a presence in goals that would calm an already erratic back line.

Neil Lennon has already said he’s not looking for a goalkeeper, if he isn’t at least looking for an alternative then on his head be it.

  1. The head scout at Celtic has pished his bed, now we have to lie in it. For twice the price of Baskass, Celtic could have Big Fraz.

  2. Lawwell has a lot to answer for but not his fault if Forster didnt want to return-.
Unless you think Celtic should be paying 92k a week for a goalkeeper then he was never going to return.
