CHRIS SUTTON has hit back after some pundits tried to take credit away from Celtic afternoon after their draw in France. The bhoys held Rennes to a 1-1 draw but what was more is the bhoy could have perhaps won the game on the night.

Celtic looked a match for the Ligue 1 side who currently sit second in the table and that was the most surprising and welcome story from the game.

Some thought Celtic were on a hiding to nothing when they made the trip across the channel but they stood up to the challenge and got a very credible result.

Sutton says he’s picked up on others trying to discount Celtic’s result by saying Rennes weren’t up to much but the Englishman is having none of it.

“I heard one or two people saying Rennes weren’t up to much, but that’s typical when Celtic get a result away from home. Too often in these situations, folk want to look at the failings of the opposition instead of dishing out some credit to Celtic and that’s unfair.” Sutton told RecordSport.

“This is a team who are second in Ligue 1 and have beaten Paris Saint Germain the other week in a stadium with a big atmosphere. The same PSG who hammered Real Madrid in midweek. That gives some perspective to Celtic’s performance.”

The Europa League group looks wide open and very different from what people would’ve expected after the first game. Many tipped Lazio and Rennes to both win in their matches with neither managing to do so.

Celtic now welcome Cluj to Celtic Park in matchday two where the bhoys will be looking to seek revenge for their Champions League exit earlier this season at the hands of the Romanian champions.
