Former Celtic Striker Chris Sutton admitted he doesn’t see Celtic building a credible run in the Europa League to win it.

The footballer turned pundit addressed the question after Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben told the press Celtic were good enough to go on and win the Europa League – but Chris isn’t so sure.

“Do I agree with Arjen Robben’s suggestion they could go all the way in the Europa League? No.

“Celtic are progressing but I don’t think they are at that stage yet. There are some very big teams in that competition and I don’t think Celtic are strong enough defensively yet.”

Arjen may have been getting ahead of himself after sampling our famous atmosphere and any level-headed Celtic fan knows that it would take a monumental effort to get to the late stages of the Europa League should we nail 3rd spot down.

Celtic have been caught short defensively since the start of the season, and it seems to be the only headache the manager has at the moment.

After failing to secure a defender in the summer window, Brendan Rodgers will try again in January should his side have European football. Chris Sutton is absolutely correct in what he has said.

  1. I don’t agree ..anderlecht got to the quarters last year and were unlucky against man u .. the only team I’d fear in it are arsenal .. if we get a run at it with no injuries I’d fancy our chances

  2. We have been saying for some time sort out the back and we would put up a good fight against most teams but till then we have to ride our luck sorry to say .we will carry on domestically being dominant no question but as for Europe we will have to brush up at the back

  3. We have the firepower up front and the midfield capable of going toe to toe with most of the sides in the EL but unless Brendan signs a quality centre half or Boyata and Simonovic, who i think are a strong partnership, can stay fit for the rest of the season( big ask given their past history of injury problems )then i cant see us getting too far in the competition. That being said sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, just ask Walter and his negative Rangers side who reached the final of the comparative UEFA cup final in Manchester.Still a big game against Anderlecht, who will be all out to finish on a high and gain revenge for the 3-0 defeat we handed out to them in front of their own fans to get through first. HH

  4. Must sign two solid CBs in January. If this is to be funded by selling the ones we have so be it. Boyata is not good enough and he will not improve to the level we need. Remember he is nearly 27.

  5. I agree with Sutton there is some cracking teams in the Europa cup and it will be very difficult for Celtic to progress in this tournament but good luck to them someone got to keep the flag flying for Scotland and as usual it’s the world’s finest GLASGOW CELTIC HH

  6. Couple centre backs and a Goalie.Gordon isnt consistant enough with the ball at his feet.(Ambrose) Sorry Boyata cost us Against Bayern. He is a Liability. We couldve had atleast a point if it wasnt for him and Gordon……Bayern were there for the Taking. We are great Domestically but in Europe its the Same Old same Old..

  7. Yep toctic sound about wright the team don’t seem to believe in there self when it comes to Europe have a go at them PSG nothing to loose .
