CHRIS SUTTON believes that Cameron Carter-Vickers is the best defender in Scotland.

The American learned on Friday night that he would not be part of the USA national squad which will mean he will be at Celtic over the next few weeks while some stars jet off.

Alongside Carl Starfelt, Carter-Vickers is part of the best defence in the league and has been a standout in the Celtic side.

With Postecoglou’s attacking philosophy the defence can be left vulnerable, however, despite this, our defence has been impressive when compared to recent seasons.

When it comes to covering for the pair, Celtic are short. Chris Sutton reflects this in his latest article for the Daily Record;

“However, I’m not sure the quality of cover is there for Carter-Vickers.

Continuing, the former Celtic man wrote;

“He has brought a solidity to Celtic on the domestic front. Fair enough, he’s been part of a backline which has continued to ship goals in Europe.

“But, in the Premiership and on the way to winning the Premier Sports Cup, Carter-Vickers put an assurance into the rearguard that wasn’t there before he signed.

Postecoglou could not find a proper pairing at the start. He had Stephen Welsh in there, youngster Dane Murray was used, so was Bitton. Carl Starfelt was added to the mix.

Starfelt played okay against Hibs at the start of the week, but I am yet to be convinced.

“Welsh has done alright, but having those two as a pairing again looks a big downgrade from having Carter-Vickers in there.”

I think Sutton is being incredibly harsh on Starfelt, the Swede has split opinion among the Celtic support however it is clear to see he is a good player.

I do recognise that one USA call-up for Cater-Vickers or an injury or suspension to come down on either of two starting centre-halves leaves the defence in an incredibly thin position.

Welsh has been good but does not have the quality our current partnership has. Jullien will need time to regain his form and Dane Murray is still developing, he will be one for the future.
