CELTIC went from having no recognised right-backs in the summer to having three by the time the transfer window slammed shut in September. At the time, Elhamed and Bauer were the two first-team options, while Jeremie Frimpong was coming into develop with a view to a first-team place further down the road.

Since then, Bauer has had some game time, but the emergence of Frimpong has limited both the Stoke player’s time and Elhamed’s.

However, as we go into an essential and hectic time of the year, it looks like Elhamed will be out for a prolonged period of time – leaving Celtic, luckily with two right-backs who can slot straight in.

Bauer has been used sparingly, but the player looks like he could be set to star for the club in their next two Europa League ties if Elhamed doesn’t make it. Jeremie Frimpong isn’t eligible for the games against Rennes and Cluj but can be registered for the next round.

This leaves Bauer with a big job to do after the international break is over and perhaps show why he should be staking a claim for the position.
