BRENDAN RODGERS has hinted the goalkeeping gloves are Scott Bain’s to lose after taking over at the start of 2019.

Bain played in the cup match against Airdrie where he kept a clean sheet; not many batted an eyelid at the goalkeeper’s inclusion against the lower league side because Rodgers had played him all the way through the League Cup campaign.

However, it was a surprise to see Scott keep his place for the league visit of St Mirren and again the goalkeeper kept a clean sheet. Craig Gordon’s last game for Celtic was a defeat at Ibrox, but had he not been on his game, the Govan club could have scored more than just one. However, during the Ibrox game, the goalkeeper’s distribution was particularly atrocious which may have prompted Rodgers to act.

It looks like the Irishman is going to give Bain every chance to become Celtic’s number one over the next run of games as he spoke to CelticTV.

“I’ve got two very good goalkeepers and I’m giving Scott a little run because I know what Craig can do.

“He also really helps the speed of our game because he gets it out quickly.”

It has been no secret the Celtic manager has been looking for a goalkeeper who can play both sides of the game well. Rodgers brought in Dorus de Vries from Forest back when he first arrived to do just that; a string of poor performances put an end to the Dutchman challenging Gordon for his gloves.

Can Bain bring both sides of the game to the table and give Rodgers what he’s been looking for?

  1. No issue with Bain getting a run in the team from me. His distribution is so much better and if Callum McGregor is going to play in the deep midfield role this will only help speed us up and stop inviting teams on to us. I’ve lost count of the number of times that Gordon has pontificated about a pass or a throw only to put a defender in trouble. Hopefully this move after the break will seal the deal for a comfortable 8 on a row… HH
