Former Celtic Star VIRGIL VAN DIJK was seen at full time consoling the Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan after the referee broke down at the end of the Germany vs Holland game.

Van Dijk who scored a last minute equaliser to send Holland through to the next round of the Nations League approached the referee at full time who was crying as the player shook hands.

The Liverpool star who would have been on a high from the goal stopped and spoke to the referee before giving him a hug.

It turns out Ovidiu had just lost his mother and was struggling to come to terms with it.

Speaking after the game as cited on Sunsport the Holland captain said: “That man broke down, stood with tears in his eyes because he had just lost his mother.”

“I wished him strength and said that he had done well.

“It’s a small thing, but maybe it helps him.”

You can watch the full highlights of the game below and can see the former Celtic defender scoring for his country.

Virgil is fulfilling the potential everybody at Celtic Park seen in him while playing for the club.

Currently the worlds most expensive defender and for good reason. Celtic cashed in on the player’s move to Liverpool last January.
