You’ll forgive some Celtic fans for thinking they’re in a time warp this summer.

First Steven Fletcher is linked with the club for the 50th time since his Hibernian days and now James McCarthy’s name has popped up today.

But how reliable is the source?

90MIN claim the exclusive. This website doesn’t have a track record on Celtic transfer stories but claim a Celtic interest out of the blue for the Irish international.

Let’s look at the facts.

McCarthy has a deal with Palace which runs until 2022 which would mean the club would have to pay a fee for the player. We currently have a plethora of midfielders with the very talented Olivier Ntcham not being able to hold down a starting place.

Simply put, if Celtic are interested in James McCarthy at this stage, I’d question the wisdom of whomever inside the club was trying to push for the deal.

However, it’s more likely conjecture, the fact McCarthy could move on this summer and that he is a Celtic fan.

As always, we say, never rule things out in football but there’s a huge leap between what Celtic need and what McCarthy can offer.

The player is 29 and played 35 times for Palace last season.

  1. Nope – don’t want him or Fletcher. They are past it, both injury prone, the team have the right mix of going for younger, faster, fitter and potentially more profitable players (sell on value). A move for these two would be a retrograde one.
