Following Celtic’s 1-1 draw at home against Kilmarnock, a result that allowed rivals Rangers to claim the top spot in the league after their victory over St Johnstone, criticism has been abundant among the Celtic fanbase.

Fans have highlighted several areas of concern, notably the midfield, which many felt was overrun during the match.

Celtic started the game with Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley as their central midfield duo. This setup allowed manager Brendan Rodgers the flexibility to deploy two strikers, Kyogo and Idah, in an attempt to maximise their attacking threat. However, as the game progressed, particularly after Rodgers decided to introduce Bernardo to the midfield, bringing the formation to a more traditional three-man midfield with a single striker, the issues persisted.

Charlie Mulgrew however, offered a different perspective on the situation. Speaking on Clyde 1 Super Scoreboard, Mulgrew suggested that the focus on the midfield might be overstated, pointing out that the outcome of the game heavily influences the narrative surrounding team performance. He emphasised the importance of taking chances, stating, “The bottom line is, if you’re not winning games, dominating games, scoring goals, the reality is, Bernardo had the chance to make it 2-0. They would have won 2-0 and then no one is talking about the midfield, the defence or this or that. It’s another victory and you move on to the next one.”
