Celtic FC Women will play their final match of the season at Celtic Park this Sunday against Motherwell, in what must be said, a welcome gesture, but an oddly timed decision given the team’s current league standing.

The club confirmed the game, kicking off at 12pm on May 18, will take place in front of the Main Stand at Paradise, with just the first seven rows of the block FS3 on sale. Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and just £1 for under-16s, with all tickets distributed digitally.

The move follows a successful precedent from last season, when the side sealed a dramatic league title on the final day at Celtic Park, thanks to Amy Gallagher’s last-minute winner. The occasion drew an excellent crowd and provided a fitting platform for a history-making day.

However, this year the circumstances are quite different.

The women’s side currently sits fourth in the SWPL, trailing leaders Hibernian by 12 points. That gap could stretch to 15 points before Sunday, as Celtic are set to travel to face Hibs midweek. There will be no title drama this time around.

While bringing Celtic FC Women to Parkhead always boosts visibility and encourages support for the women’s game, the timing has raised eyebrows. Many will question why this fixture, with little on the line in terms of silverware, has been selected for Celtic Park. It feels a little like a box-ticking exercise rather than part of a considered plan to properly build support and momentum for the women’s side.

Nevertheless, it offers fans an affordable chance to support the team at the stadium, and it remains a rare opportunity for the players to experience a matchday at Celtic Park.

  1. Time for Elena to go. Same as the mens game, if you can’t beat Sevco it’s all over and she can take about 7 of that team with her.
