The Three Questions Sky Sports Didn’t Want to Answer

CELTIC have been relentless in their pursuit of the truth after Sky Sports conducted an interview with Alfredo Morelos last week.

The broadcaster misrepresented what the player was saying with the Sky Sports endorsed subtitles claiming Morelos was making some dangerous assertions about the Celtic support.

When people got wind of the actual interview, Spanish speaking Celtic fans translated the interview and the Ibrox striker doesn’t say anywhere near the things the subtitles claimed.

Celtic issued a first statement asking for an investigation by Sky and steps to be taken. When an apology came back to the club, Sky thought that was the end of the matter but Celtic aren’t messing around and nor should they when it comes to such serious issues.

In their second statement about the Interview, the club weren’t satisfied with the ‘inadequate’ apology. Furthermore, the Scottish Champions want three fundamental questions answered. These answers not forthcoming in the apology to Celtic or The Rangers when Sky Sports made their statement.

1 Who was responsible for the inaccurate translation?

2 What steps were taken by Sky Television to ascertain the accuracy, or otherwise, of the translation provided?

3 What part did Sky Television play in briefing the story, based on the inaccurate translation, to the wider media?

The club go on to state the reasons why these questions need answered and why Ofcom should step in.

We believe this is a matter of substantial public interest for the following reasons:

1. Issues of racism and sectarianism are far too important to be manipulated in this way by any broadcaster or third party.

2. The use of mis-translation to convey false meaning is a dangerous form of “fake news” which must be condemned and sanctioned.

3. Mr Morelos has been seriously misrepresented and is deserving of apology and explanation.
