Think what you want of Chris Sutton but honesty always seems to be at the forefront of what he does and says on TV. Sure, sometimes his language and headlines might want a few bites. Sometimes he might seek attention, that is just survival with how modern day media works.

Sutton has a base layer of honesty in how he conducts himself on TV, other pundits play safe and like to stay middle of the road with their commentating. Stepping out from the norm and speaking your mind will bring about its own problems. Speaking with BT Sport’s about the Scottish game Sutton lends some insight into the goings on behind his out stuck neck.

Asked about Ibrox, security, and Rangers* fans Sutton said…

“I have a security guard, not everywhere I go. We have security guards at every game – BT have security. “I’m on social media and you get a lot of nonsense on there, but you also get a lot of sensible people on there.

“I like to engage when I’m walking around Glasgow. “I don’t have many problems – there’s the occasional person who will shout abuse…that will happen to everyone.

Been true to himself and his way of speaking openly he continued,

“There are a lot – not loads – of Rangers fans who are alright, who come up and talk about football.

Sutton might be accused of been biased but he’s not afraid to put the boot into the good half of Glasgow either.

“But at the minute, certain Celtic fans take umbrage because I say [Jermain] Defoe and [Steven] Davis are good signings and have been there and done it. “I don’t have a problem saying that because they have. “I’m not going to stand there and dismiss their careers because they’ve been bloody good players. “I don’t get that – I don’t understand fans who think that way.

It’s clear Sutton won’t be changing his mic policy any time soon. The fact that he has become so prominent on BT Sports shows his attributes to the station. Let’s face it, take Chris Sutton out of the BT Sports team and they become like any other group of pundits. When you think that Sky will soon replace BT to cover the Scottish Game and you think of Kris Boyd, Kris Commons, and Neil McCann you know you’ll only be tuning in for the first whistle and turning off at the final whistle.
