Former Celtic foe Alex McLeish believes Ange Postecoglou will likely ask the Celtic board to grant a new contract for stand out bhoy Anthony Ralston after his exploits so far this season.

Ralston could have been released this summer under different circumstances, but because Celtic were so short, the defender had a one-year contract extension triggered and he’s played a lot of football.

Anthony missed the Ross County game at the weekend with a slight knock, but he’s expected to travel with the Hoops squad this afternoon as they head to Seville.

Former Scotland boss McLeish thinks Ange will be keen to keep a hold of the right-back should his form continue.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think the manager, Postecoglou, he should be the guy who gets the credit for bringing him back and introducing him again.

Ralston seems to have come back with a lot of confidence. A belief in himself that possibly would have been missing over the last couple of years.

“He looked as if he was going to break through and it didn’t quite happen. That can set a player back mentally, a wee bit.

“If a player can fight back and get where Ralston has got himself, it showa bit of character.

“I would imagine that if he can continue the form that he’s in and Postecoglou doesn’t have his eye on any others in that position abroad or nearer home, he will be the first on the bandwagon to say: ‘We’ve got to tie this guy up.’”

Celtic signed Jusip Juranovic at right back late in the window and he played against County on Saturday during the club’s 3-0 win.

Anthony shouldn’t be out of contention now just because the Croatian has come into the club. The Scottish defender has done enough to continue to get game times, if that happens, a new deal has to be around the corner.

  1. I must agree new deal for a solid RB he will get game time best to have 2 players in each position and share the load or both can be used to close of right side one in midfield 1 at RB and change about…

  2. Ange has said often that players are brought in for a position to to support others already there. That means both will get games as the situation demands.

  3. We need some depth in the squad and Anthony more than brings that, and he more than deserves his contract on the obvious work he’s put in to get where he is, both physically and mentally, today.
