Speculation in Australia over Tom Rogic’s future has taken a new twist with one pundit claiming there has been a crazy rumour the midfielder could call it quits altogether.

Dave Lewis of BeinSport who is a friend of Tom claims there is noise in certain quarters the Celtic icon could be ready to hang up his boots after leaving Celtic and then dropping out of the Australian squad.

Stewart writes Tom is back in the UK:

“While back in the UK after a brief trip to Australia, there are no indications of where next for Rogic, 29, with his British agent Josh Barnett declining to comment on the path ahead.

“There have even been suggestions the mercurial Rogic might simply slip quietly into retirement after his nine-year stay with the Hoops.

Australia assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has reiterated he knows nothing about Tom’s whereabouts or his plans for the future.

“We don’t really know why he pulled out at the last moment (for the playoffs against UAE and Peru for apparent ‘personal reasons’),” he said. “And we don’t know where his thoughts are with the future. We’re in the dark.

“We’ve offered all the help we can through Football Australia and the PFA and we really aren’t any the wiser.”

Ange Postecoglou was quizzed about Tom last month, the Celtic manager replying:

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, said: “I think Tom Rogic is fine. Has anyone spoken to him? No-one spoke to him when he was here for 10 years, either. That’s Tom!

“I’d be actually more concerned if he was out there talking to people. Leave him alone, he’s fine.

“Tom will get his next move done and I’m sure he’s in a great place. I haven’t been in contact with him, but the people I know say that he’s got no problems.”

Tom could have stayed at Celtic for another season with an option of another year in his deal. The player expressed a desire to leave after nine years and the club granted the Australian his release.

We’d hate to think Tom is just going to ride off into the sunset before his time, but we also appreciate Tom will do what’s best for him and his family.

If he’s back in the UK, surely he’s working on a move.
