Former Celtic loanee Tomas Cvancara appears to have become a source of frustration at Borussia Monchengladbach following his return to the Bundesliga club.
Cvancara arrived at Celtic in January on a short-term loan, with the Scottish champions holding an option to make the move permanent for around £7 million.
He was one of three attacking additions during the winter window, joining Junior Adamu and Joel Mvuka as the Hoops looked to strengthen their forward options for the second half of the campaign.
None of the trio truly managed to make the impact many supporters had hoped for.
The 25-year-old finished his spell in Glasgow with two goals and one assist from 13 appearances. While his time at Celtic never really gathered momentum, he still produced one moment that secured his place in the memories of the support.
The Czech striker kept his composure to score the decisive penalty at Ibrox as Celtic won the shootout to reach the Scottish Cup semi-final. It was a pressure kick in hostile surroundings, and one supporters will remember for years to come, even if the game itself lacked any real quality.
His loan was then cut short by a groin injury, ending his season before the final run-in. Celtic ultimately decided against activating the purchase option, bringing his brief spell at the club to an end.
Cvancara returned to Borussia Monchengladbach to continue his recovery, but according to German outlet BILD, his situation at the club is far from straightforward.
The report claims the 24-year-old has no future with the Bundesliga side, who had been hoping to move him on this summer. That task has become more difficult after he was handed a recovery period of around two months.
While his Monchengladbach teammates have already returned for pre-season training, Cvancara recently posted a photo of himself relaxing in a swimming pool back home in Czechia.
BILD describe the post as a potential “provocation” that has not gone down well with sections of the club’s support. The report adds that Monchengladbach did approve the trip, but there is still a belief it is “sure to rub his teammates the wrong way” given the timing.
Despite moving on from Celtic, Cvancara still appears to look back fondly on his time in Glasgow.
He recently shared an image on social media of Callum McGregor walking up The Celtic Way with the Premiership trophy, a reminder of the title-winning campaign he briefly played a part in. His two league goals contributed during the run-in, even if his overall spell failed to live up to expectations.
Things never quite clicked for Cvancara at Celtic, and few would argue the club made the wrong call by passing on the option to sign him permanently.
Even so, one successful penalty at Ibrox ensured he left with a moment that will always be remembered by the Celtic support.
