Stephen Welsh’s loan spell at Motherwell appears to have come to an emotional end after a hugely successful season at Fir Park.

The Celtic defender has become a real favourite among the Motherwell support over the course of the campaign, producing a string of impressive performances as the Steelmen secured European football.
Welsh was temporarily recalled by Celtic during the January transfer window amid defensive concerns, but once Benjamin Arthur arrived at the club, the centre-back was allowed to head back to Fir Park and continue his development with Stuart Kettlewell’s side.
Saturday’s 1-0 win over Hibernian looks set to be his final appearance for Motherwell – and he nearly signed off in perfect fashion.
Despite the Steelmen being reduced to ten men, Welsh thought he had helped put the game beyond doubt when he found the net to make it 2-0. However, the goal was eventually ruled out by VAR after a foul was given on the goalkeeper.
It did little to dampen the appreciation from the Motherwell support though.
Following the match, the club posted an emotional farewell message to the defender on social media.
They wrote: “Never fall in love with a loan player? Too late. Thank you for a magnificent season, Stephen.”

Welsh’s future at Celtic remains unclear heading into the summer, but his spell at Motherwell has undoubtedly boosted both his reputation and confidence after a difficult period struggling for regular game time at Parkhead.
With European football now secured for Motherwell, supporters clearly feel the defender played a major role in one of the club’s most memorable recent campaigns.
