Signing a player who spent last season in the top flight of the Dutch league becoming the top goal scorer in the process should certainly excite Celtic fans.

Gorgios Geakoumakis joined the club on deadline day after protracted negotiations with his former side Venlo.

The striker had his most prolific season on record last term for Venlo – before that, it’s not quite so impressive.

The biggest shift for the Greek striker is a team that plays to his strengths. We have seen so many strikers come here who look up to the job but ultimately fail because our system doesn’t suit them.

Ange Postecoglou is not daft and from what we’re told, the manager was keen to get this deal done for Geakoumakis. The Celtic gaffer obviously sees value and perhaps a Plan B in the frontman.

Kyogo Furuhashi is likely going to be reinstated as Celtic’s number one striker against Ross County after being shifted out to the left to accommodate the now departed Odsonne Edouard at Ibrox.

Former Celtic striker Pierre Van Hooijdonk watched the player strut his stuff in the Dutch league last season and is high on what Gorgios could do in a Hoops jersey but again, that caveat of playing to his strengths comes up.

“I think he’s capable of scoring 20-plus goals for Celtic this season” Van Hooijdonk told RecordSport

“If you use him properly and play to his strengths, he’s going to get the club a lot of goals. The level of his finishing is top class. If you look at his goals, most of them are really good goals, with a real identity. They’re not all just about power.

“I can understand what he tries to do with his finishes, even when he misses chances.”

If the 26-year-old can get over 20 goals for Celtic this season, it will be seen as a fantastic piece of business by the club.

  1. Good luck to him-needs to hit the ground running. Has a good chance to establish himself now Eddy has departed.
Wouldn’t pay much attention to Pierre tho, I remember him giving his mate Ciftci the big build up!
Bayo & Klimala took time to get a game and never established themselves so give him an early chance even its off the bench
