Daizen Maeda once again proved his worth on the big stage, with a stunning goal in Celtic’s 1-1 Champions League draw against Club Brugge. Yet, his early withdrawal in the second half raised questions, given the game was still in the balance.

Brendan Rodgers’ decision to take Maeda off with Celtic pushing for a winner underlined the immense physical demands the Japanese forward has faced in recent weeks. Having clocked up significant air miles during Japan’s international fixtures, Maeda returned to Glasgow only to throw himself straight back into Celtic’s relentless schedule.

Maeda’s contribution against Brugge was vital, as he provided the standout moment of the match. Latching onto a clever pass from substitute Alex Valle, the winger cut inside and curled a superb effort in off the far post, leaving Simon Mignolet with no chance. It was a goal of the highest quality, and one that kept Celtic in contention for progression to the Champions League knockout stages.

However, the intensity of Maeda’s performances—both for club and country—does come at a cost. Rodgers’ decision to replace him with James Forrest in the 72nd minute was likely influenced by the sheer workload the winger has shouldered. Kasper Schmeichel praised Maeda after the match, calling him “a top-class player”, The Danish goalkeeper also commenting about the winger’s schedule to TNT Sports “To give that kind of output, that energy, after all the travel he’s been doing – it drives the team.

Maeda’s relentless playing style is a double-edged sword. While his work rate and dynamism are invaluable, the physical toll of combining international games and travel with his pressing-heavy game is significant.

For Celtic fans, it’s an insight into the demands faced by their Champions League hero. As Rodgers’ side continues their campaign, the club will be counting on Maeda to recover quickly and deliver more moments of brilliance.
