Sebastian Tounekti has wasted no time making an impression at Celtic, with his first goal for the club arriving in Sunday’s 4-0 victory over Partick Thistle in the Premier Sports Cup.
The Norwegian-Tunisian winger was once again one of the standout performers, combining direct running with composure in the final third.
His goal came via a neat exchange with fellow new signing Kelechi Iheanacho, who slipped the ball into his path before Tounekti finished emphatically. For fans, it was the most encouraging moment of the tie, two summer arrivals linking up to devastating effect.
Iheanacho had already made his mark the previous weekend, scoring a last-gasp penalty at Rugby Park, and while his Celtic career is only just beginning, Tounekti believes the Nigerian striker has all the attributes to become a key figure.
Having played in the Premier League and at international level, Iheanacho’s pedigree is clear, and the challenge now is to regain rhythm and consistency in Glasgow.
Tounekti told CeltsAreHere, “Yes, 100%. We all know what Kelechi can bring. He has played at the top level for many years. When he starts to get his confidence back, he will be a top player for Celtic. I’m really looking forward to see him more and to see him growing with the team. I think it’s a good day for Celtic this season.”
Rodgers has spoken about the need for Celtic’s new-look front line to gel quickly, and early signs suggest Iheanacho and Tounekti could play an important role in that. Their understanding at Firhill was a glimpse of what might be to come.
