Former Celtic player Charlie Nicholas has claimed the last five weeks of Celtic results have been a write-off and unless there’s a dip from Celtic’s city rivals in the next five or six games, the club looks like they’ll miss out on the coveted ten in a row.

Nicholas covers:

  • Seven dropped points in the past five games.
  • One draw and two defeats in the Europa League.
  • Defensive frailties; Claiming Bitton should only be used against lower table opposition.
  • Laxalt and Frimpong aren’t full-backs.
  • Tinkering with the squad too much.

Writing in his Express column, in the print edition of the paper, Nicholas said:

“The past five weeks have been a total write-off for Celtic, with just five points taken from a possible 12 in the Premiership, not to mention two defeats and a draw in their doomed Europa League group campaign

“Neil Lennon is paying the penalty for his decision to chop and change his team.

“Celtic remain vulnerable defensively and he is picking players in a system that isn’t really working.

“Diego Laxalt and Jeremie Frimpong are both wing-backs, not full-backs.

“Kris Ajer is struggling and Nir Bitton should only be utilised at centre-back when he is up against lesser teams at Parkhead.

“Celtic have two games in hand, but the deficit could be even more by the time they get to December and play Hearts in the Scottish Cup Final.

“In terms of 10 In A Row, we have to wait and see how things stand in another five or six league games.

“If Rangers get to 20 games with this gap or more then it would be hard to look beyond them and I would say it was their title to throw away.”

It’s hard to argue with a lot of what Charlie says here. The Celtic fans know something radical has to happen for them to pull things back. The postponed games are a massive issue and have come about due to the pandemic. A postponed game because of government intervention and another one for the Scottish Cup semi-final have put Celtic so far behind.

The only thing Celtic can do now is to win and keep winning to see if they can exert pressure.

In what should be a high-pressure situation for our rivals this season, the edge has been taken off them with no fan to get on their back when things aren’t going right and Celtic quite obviously suffering in empty stadiums.
