CELTIC TARGET Birger Meling’s fate was sealed tonight in the Champions League play-off round with Rosenborg failing to get past Croatia Zagreb.

Already 2-0 down from the first leg, the Norwegians needed a big performance on Tuesday night to reach the Champions League but failed at the final hurdle. The club will now drop into the Europa League group stage.

All the talk over the past week is about a potential move to Celtic and the hanging carrot of the Champions league stopping any deal from being possible. Now that it’s out the way we’re likely to see if the Meling deal was all talk or there was substance to the rumour Chris Sutton started.

Meling is no stranger to Celtic Park and played their twice last season in both the Champions League qualifiers as well as the Europa League group stage.

The left-back has been touted as a possible Tierney replacement. The transfer window closes on Monday evening and Celtic are now in a race against time to get any deal over the line.
