A surprise name popped up on the radar yesterday with news Neven Subotic was a target for Celtic, apparently.

My immediate response was an exhale of derision. Knowing the players long standing relationship with the German outfit, at one point being a pivotal part of their backline.

Since those days though, the player has somehow become an afterthought at Dortmund. In fact, when I did a little digging, it would appear the 29-year-old has been on the cusp of a permanent exit from the Westfalenstadion.

An injury ruled a move to the English Premier League out back in 2016 and since then he’s failed to hit double figures in appearances for Dortmund, however, a brief spell at FC Köln gave Neven some much needed game time.

So, after realising that the player was not only available but would be available for a decent price, my aforementioned exhale of derision might have been wide of the mark.

However, apart from the player wanting a move away and Celtic seemingly needing another defender, there’s not much else to this story.

Brendan Rodgers has been annoyed in recent times with the suggestion he needs to further strengthen his defence after bringing in Marvin Compper. The defender has been ruled out for a month but should play a large proportion of the second half of Celtic’s season.

Would it be appealing to have a defender like Neven in? Of course, but with Celtic and Brendan Rodgers looking more at a playmaker, a move for Subotic seems to be fiction rather than fact.

  1. Brendan Rodgers clearly has a blind spot and is being pig-headed we need 2 cbs as the ones we have are not good enough. Compper is out. Although he is an excellent manager he is wrong here. A blind man can see it. He has done this in the past with certain players.
