David Turnbull has shown his capabilities from outside the area during his Celtic career so far – but he might have just scored his best one yet on Saturday afternoon.

The midfielder scored a belter from outside the area with a swerving effort, landing straight in the top corner, which led the Hoops to all three points.

Of course, there was little celebration from the Wishaw man against his former side where he came through the academy.

After the game, he admitted he knew beforehand if he were to score, there would be no celebration despite it being tough to stop himself from doing so.

“Everyone knows what kind of club Motherwell are and how they helped me when I was younger, so I wanted to be respectful,” he said, speaking to Sun Sport.

“I knew beforehand I wouldn’t celebrate because I spoke to my family about it.

“They were asking me what I’d do if I scored a goal, and I told them I wouldn’t, I’d just leave it. Obviously, I wanted to score, but I didn’t want to celebrate too much.

“I felt like doing it because it’s a great feeling every time you score, and that was no different, but I’d decided I wasn’t going to do it.

“It was hard to stop myself, but I was delighted to put the ball in the top corner anyway.

“Hopefully, I can score more of them in future and will be celebrating them as I want to.”

It has been a bit of a bumpy ride for Turnbull in the last few years. From coming through at Motherwell to a failed move to Celtic due to injury, before finally moving to Parkhead last season.

In what was a poor campaign last year, the Scotland internationalist was one of the better players in the side and picked up awards for his displays.

He will now be looking to build upon another great goal yesterday by putting in a performance for Ange Postecoglou’s side in the Europa League this midweek.
