Celtic midfielder David Turnbull has talked up the performances of struggling Hoops star James McCarthy for his performance against Aberdeen on Sunday.

The Irish midfielder, who joined the club as a free agent in the summer, hasn’t had the best start to life as a Celtic player due to several different issues.

On Sunday, though, he was handed his first start for around two months and played 90 minutes for the first time this campaign.

The 31-year old also played his part in the lead up to the winning goal, threading a tidy pass through to the feet of Liel Abada, who couldn’t covert, but the chance was swiftly followed in by Callum McGregor, scoring in unusual fashion.

Fellow midfielder David Turnbull was left impressed with McCarthy’s display on the afternoon, as he praised the former Crystal Palace man for his performance.

“He did excellently in his first 90 minutes,” he said as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Macca was brilliant and showed his bit of quality at the second goal with a nice wee chop and great through ball to Liel, and I think he showed throughout the game how good he can be.

“We are going to need everybody. You saw a few boys getting coming on as subs late on, and a few boys got called on earlier.

“We are going to need to count on everybody as there are a lot of games coming up in December, and it is about sticking together and working as a team.”

Sunday’s game was McCarthy’s best in a Celtic shirt. However, there were definitely still aspects upon which the midfielder could improve on in Ange Postecoglou’s side, in my opinion.

In the first half, it felt like he wasn’t all that involved in the play. However, he did make up for that in the second half with his performance that ultimately saw Celtic take home the three points.

Maybe that is something that will come with more minutes on the park, and we will just need to wait and see if that comes to fruition.

One thing that we do know is, McCarthy might need to be called upon more as we approach a hectic month of fixtures for the Hoops.
