Two former Celtic players, Paddy Roberts and Leo Hjelde, will be heading to Wembley after a dramatic Championship play-off semi-final win for Sunderland on Tuesday night.

The Black Cats sealed their place in the play-off final thanks to a stunning 124th-minute winner over Coventry City, sparking wild celebrations and setting up a shot at Premier League promotion against Sheffield United. It was a fittingly chaotic end to a tense tie, with Roberts and Hjelde playing their part in taking Sunderland to the brink of top-flight football.

Paddy Roberts, now 28, remains fondly remembered at Celtic Park. The winger enjoyed two loan spells under Brendan Rodgers, where he lit up the Premiership with his flair and ability to unlock defences. Arriving on loan from Manchester City, Roberts became a fan favourite with key performances during Celtic’s unbeaten domestic treble season in 2016/17.

Leo Hjelde’s time at Celtic was far less high profile. Signed as a teenager with promise, the Norwegian defender never made a competitive first-team appearance before moving on to further his development elsewhere. Still just 21, Hjelde has worked his way into the Championship and is now on the cusp of reaching the Premier League.

Both players have taken very different routes since leaving Celtic, but Tuesday’s late drama sees them reunited in success. The final against Sheffield United offers a huge opportunity, with the riches and spotlight of the Premier League awaiting the winners.

All eyes now turn to Wembley. Good luck to both.
