Italian Serie A side Udinese have opted to sign former Celtic defender Filip Benkovic after their failed attempt to recruit current Hoops star, Stephen Welsh.

Over the last week, reports had suggested that Udinese were interested in bringing the Celtic youngster to the club, having two bids rejected for the Scotland under-21 internationalist.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou made his stance clear in yesterday’s press conference when asked about Welsh’s future in Glasgow, insisting ‘he’s going nowhere’.

Before making a third move for Welsh, the Italian side appear to have moved on in their pursuit of a new central defender and have signed a familiar name to Hoops fans after agreeing to bring Filip Benkovic to the club.

The Croatian defender, who spent a season on loan in Glasgow during the 2018/19 season, was let go by former club Leicester City and quickly made a move over to the Serie A, agreeing to join Udinese.

They made have had an eye on Celtic defender over the last few years, given their move to bring Welsh to the club, before instead moving on to Benkovic, who has had a tough few years and will be looking to kick start his career once again.
