FOOTBALL and politics go hand in hand when UEFA decide they do, but when they’re not on board it becomes punishable and fine worthy.

We saw Celtic handed a fine for supporters waving Palestine flags when up against Israeli opposition a few years ago.

The European football governing body is so out of touch with football at its roots, it’s no surprise to me Shakhtar have hit a brick wall with their simple request.

The Ukrainian club want to draw attention to a charity set up by the country to help with medical aid, and rebuilding the country by wearing a patch on their strip against Celtic. This request has been declined by UEFA — A UEFA statement read: “According to the competition rules, the use of the logo of charitable organisations is not possible when it is related to politics.” Via RecordSport.

This is days after UEFA sold the rights to the game Shakhtar vs Celtic game to Russian TV. You couldn’t make it up.

Celtic head to Poland to play Shakhtar who surprised everyone last week when they blew away Leipzig in Matchday one of the competition.

Former Celtic winger Marian Shved scored a double against the Germans and will have his eye on doing something similar against his old club.

Celtic need to start getting points on the board, if they can get something away to the Ukrainian side, it’ll give them a massive boost.
