It was back in 2019 when then boss Brendan Rodgers and his scouting chief Lee Congerton brought in two American into the fold — Andrew Gutman and Manny Perez.

Since then, neither have played a game for Celtic and have spent their time in the states plying their trade for various clubs.

Gutman has been doing well and has progressed since signing for Celtic but he’s yet to play a competitive game and as the months role by, it looks like this attempt to shop in the US market has been a poor piece of business.

There’s clear problems with getting the right work permit’s so Celtic can actually use the players. At this point, the club should be looking to offload the players.

We checked the Celtic official website and according to that both Manny and Andrew are classed as Celtic players out on loan.

This is what Gutman stated back in May last year to the Glasgow Times:

“Obviously work permits and stuff have got in my way and that still isn’t sorted. I’m on-loan to Cincinnati for the year and if I’m honest I don’t really know how the work permit stuff works.

“There are other Americans playing in Scotland and they seem to have gone over there no problem. I don’t know if you are playing for a bigger club it is maybe harder to get.

“I try not to think about it too much though and just focus on what I am doing at my club and if I can show well enough then I can get back to Celtic.”

It’s been an ill fated transfer attempt from the beginning and whoever gave the green light clearly didn’t take into account the work permit parameters the both needing to play a certain amount of games for their country to be eligible.

We expect them to quietly fall off the radar but it would be interesting to know what kind of money was put into these deals and if Celtic are in any way responsible for either player financially.
